Estimating the Cost of Machine Quilting

Remember

Quilt Preparation benefits both you, the piecer, and me, the quilter!!

If your quilt has been prepared as per the Quilt Preparation Guidelines

the only extra fee that incurred would be for thread.

To determine an approximate cost of the machine quilting process you can use the following formula.

  • Measure the length and width of the quilt top in inches
  • Multiply the length by the width
  • Divide by 144, this gives the quilt area in square feet
  • Multiply the area by the rate per sq foot, add any additional costs (ie borders, loading etc) to get an approximate cost.

For example, a quilt measuring 70 x 70 would be as follows:

 70 x 70 = 4900 ÷144 = 34.02 square feet

The cost for quilting in a continuous line pattern at $4.00 per foot x 34.02 would cost $136.08.
